Activity Title: Care Bundles for Infection Prevention and Safety

Statement of Need:

In this module, we discuss infection prevention and control care bundles which can be implemented at healthcare facilities in both high-resource and resource-limited settings. These care bundles can contribute to infection prevention, reduce nosocomial infections, limit unnecessary antibiotic use, and contribute to antibiotic stewardship activities in health care facilities.

Faculty:
Professor Angelini Messina
Angeliki Messina is the Head of Antibiotic Stewardship and Clinical Pharmacy Digitisation of the Netcare Hospital Group. Her qualifications include, a B.Pharm (with distinction) obtained in 2009 and an M.Pharm completed in 2018, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2015, Angeliki obtained advanced certification in antibiotic stewardship through the Making a Difference in Infectious Diseases organisation (USA)

Dr. Sean Wasserman
Dr Sean Wasserman completed his medical degree as well as post-graduate training at the University of Cape Town. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Infectious Diseases at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. Dr Wasserman is a Consultant and Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town.

During this course, you will learn evidence-based practices that, when implemented collectively, will improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
• Describe what a care bundle is
• Restate the benefits of implementing care bundles
• Explain how to implement care bundles to achieve greatest success - with appropriate outcome measures
• Construct interventions for the most common causes of infection in your own health care facility
• Discuss practices, and how they differ, in high- and under-resourced settings
• Describe the elements necessary to make a care bundle most effective

The target audience for this module is physicians, nurses, public health officials, researchers, immunization officers, and other health professionals.
