Activity Title: ProMED and COVID-19 - A Q&A With Our Moderator Team

Statement of Need:
On the night of December 30, 2019, ISID’s Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases (ProMED) Deputy Editor, Dr. Marjorie Pollack posted a request for information to the ProMED network after being contacted by a trusted colleague about a cluster of undiagnosed pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China. Through her previous experience with SARS decades earlier, Marjorie knew this new threat must be taken seriously. Luckily she sounded the alarm, and in doing so was the first to provide a detailed report alerting the international infectious diseases community to what evolved into what we now know as the global COVID-19 pandemic. This session explores ProMED and it's role in disease surveillence.

Dr. Uzma Bashir Aamir
Dr. Uzma Bashir Aamir is a medical doctor and has trained in basic and molecular virology. After graduating from Rawalpindi medical college, Rawalpindi, Dr Aamir completed her M.Phil in microbiology from Quaid-e Azam University Islamabad.

- Explain the steps in ProMED’s process for collecting information about disease outbreaks
- Understand who can submit information to ProMED, and how submissions can be made
- Discuss where information can be sourced from, and how machine learning (AI) plays a role in alerting ProMED
- Describe outbreaks that ProMED has played a role in identifying
- Discuss the accuracy and transparency of disease reporting.
The target audience for this module is physicians, nurses, public health officials, researchers, immunization officers, and other health professionals.
