Activity Title: COVID-19 and its causative agent, SARS-CoV-2

Statement of Need:
In this module, we will discuss the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) and its causative agent, SARS-CoV-2. We will also discuss the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect of COVID-19 on antimicrobial stewardship programs, vaccine developments, and measures to help prevention and contain COVID-19 infections. Information presented here is adapted from ISID’s Guide to Infection in the Healthcare Setting.

Professor Angelini Messi
Angeliki Messina is the Head of Antibiotic Stewardship and Clinical Pharmacy Digitisation of the Netcare Hospital Group. Her qualifications include, a B.Pharm (with distinction) obtained in 2009 and an M.Pharm completed in 2018, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2015, Angeliki obtained advanced certification in antibiotic stewardship through the Making a Difference in Infectious Diseases organisation (USA)
Dr. Sean Wasserman
Dr Sean Wasserman completed his medical degree as well as post-graduate training at the University of Cape Town. He is a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Infectious Diseases at the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. Dr Wasserman is a Consultant and Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and HIV Medicine at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town.

In this module, we will discuss the 2019 Coronavirus Disease and its causative agent, SARS-CoV-2.
By the end of tthis course, particpants will be able to:
- Discuss the background and etiology of the COVID-19 pandemic
- Understand the effect of COVID-19 on antimicrobial stewardship programs,
- Describe vaccine developments and measures to help prevention and contain COVID-19 infections.
The target audience for this module is physicians, nurses, public health officials, researchers, immunization officers, and other health professionals.
